Cutting to the Creative Juices

Untitled

Today I'm going to show you some cutting boards that my dad made for Christmas gifts.  They were all made with whatever he had in the shop from other projects, so that means maple, mahogany, oak, white birch, and there's probably some others thrown in there somewhere!

I just love all the different colors and grain patterns!

This board has a well on one side to catch all the juices of whatever's being cut.

To ensure that the juice runs into the well, there are two sets of different sized rubber feet on the bottom of the board.  Clever eh?  This also means that the board won't slide around while cutting!

My sister and I got Dad a branding iron kit last year for Christmas.  Not too long ago he finally decided what he wanted on the branding head, and luckily it came just in time to start branding his Christmas projects!!

I think these cutting boards came out so well because he limited himself to working with whatever wood he had on hand.  Giving oneself limitations often aids in creativity, because you've created a problem you have to solve.  How can I use these pieces of wood to make a cutting board?  Chances are it pushed him to think a little bit differently and combine different colors and widths of wood than if he was given an unlimited supply of whatever wood he wanted.  I think he does his best work when he's in a "how can I make this work?" type of situation, and this is only a small example of it!

  1. What beautiful cutting boards, Kate. Congratulations to your father for his amazing work! The boards are especially beautiful because of the different woods used. They have such a gorgeous smooth finish to them too!
I like the hand-crafted sign on the back with the picture of the saw and the plane and your father's name. I especially love that top board with the handle and would use it to present cheese!
