Cat the Cat and Mouse the Mouse

Untitled

Hooray! I can start sharing some of my Christmas crochet makes! I made these two cuties to go with Mo Willems' book Cat the Cat Who Is That? I made Mouse the Mouse and Cat the Cat from the cat and mouse patterns in Mongoreto's etsy shop. (I've made quite a few of her patterns!)

The cat pattern is great, with a sweater that is easily customized (stripes, solid, stripes and solid...). I loved that the only pieces you sew on are the arms and the tail, which makes for a quick make!

And the mouse is just too stinkin' adorable. I think there were a few mistakes in the pattern with round counts, but I followed the pictures the best I could. A few extra or missing rows in the body or legs isn't going to be a huge deal.

I just loved making these!

Christmas Table

Untitled

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! Christmas is always a busy time of year, and now that it is over, I've been enjoying not doing much at all... which has reminded me how much I have not done with the blog. So, please bear with me as I get back into the swing of things!

And I'll start with a few pictures of our Christmas table...

Ikea RAST Hack

Untitled

Hey everyone! Today I thought I'd share my new dresser with you! With help from my dad, I hacked two Ikea RAST dressers into this single dresser that I'm obsessed with. (There's tons of cool hacks from this simple [and cheap!] pine dresser. Just search "ikea rast hack" and be amazed.)

Birthday Hummingbird

Untitled

For my Gram's birthday (along with doll I made), I also crocheted up a little chunky hummingbird! He looks a little goofy, but I think that's what makes him so cute!

Untitled

I made him very similar to the duck I recently made. (Although I think I made this hummingbird taller somehow.) He cracked me up the whole time I was making him. He also got a pretty good chuckle from people when Gram took him out of the bag!

Happy Tuesday friends! I got this picture before the last of the fog lifted off the lake this morning. Notice the subtle cloud lines and their reflections?

Have a fantastic day!

A Duck Day

Duck

I have a gazillion projects going, my Gram's birthday party coming up, Thanksgiving and Christmas to start thinking about, so what do I do? I make a duck. Yep, the other day I was just compelled to make a duck. Actually, I lied. I was compelled to make the beaver that I had designed in my head, but I was out of brown cotton. A duck was naturally the next choice.

Rambling Girl

Untitled

My Gram's 95th birthday is coming up soon. (I know, 95, pretty amazing huh?) I knew I was going to get her a gift card to a craft store (so she can pick out fabric for the doll clothes she makes), so all I needed was a fun gift card holder. What better gift card holder than a doll?

Sunday Smiles

Untitled

Hey everyone! I've been so busy this past month, (making me a little more absent from the blog than I'd like), but I was so glad that this weekend I was able to visit some friends for some fall fun! We went apple picking, made apple crisp, and carved pumpkins (mine is the one on the left)!

Untitled

We also went on a pretty walk. You probably can't tell from the photo, but it was snowing a bit! Eek! Not quite ready for snow, but it was a great walk and still felt like fall to me! And most smile-worthy was some much needed time with friends!

Have you guys done any fall decorating or crafting?

Wednesday WIP

Untitled

The crocheting part of the blanket is complete!! Now to sew in all of those ends...

Untitled

I'm hoping it looks worse than it really is. My plan of attack is to work little bits of it here and there, keep plugging away at it, and get it done before my friend has her baby!

What are you guys working on?

Happy Tuesday! I know I've missed a few posts here and there, and I'm hoping it's because I've been a little more busy than usual and not because I'm experiencing some kind of burn-out!

I chose these photos today because I like the contrast between the flowers and the sky. One is more subtle and faded, while the other is bold and rich... don't you think?

Hope you all are having a fantastic week!

Crocheted Animals for Baby Shower

Untitled

My sister and I recently threw a baby shower for one of our good friends, and I thought I'd share with you some of the crocheted animals I made as a gift because I just adored the patterns. If you're looking for some different crocheted animal patterns, maybe you'd like to try these!

Crocheted Runner

Untitled

I have an actual FINISHED piece to share today! I made this runner as part of a wedding gift recently, and was very happy with it. I used motif no. 31 from the Japanese book Crochet Lace Doily.

Sunday Smiles

Untitled

Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well with plenty to smile about! You can't see much of it, but here's a pic of the front of my new canoe! I'm super excited about it. It's a canoe from the Adirondack Canoe Company, and we were lucky enough to buy one from a friend (barely!) used. It weighs only about 20 pounds! So light!! Perhaps I'll be able to go take it on some adventures!

Hope you have a beautiful Sunday!

I missed Photo-Tuesday, but I hope to make it up with a few pictures I took on my Ausable Chasm trip today! We just did the walking trails, and it was beautiful! I want to go back for the "Adventure Trail" for the zip-lining and cable bridges- which would be both awesome and terrifying!

Wip Wednesday

Untitled

So here's my progress on the project I alluded to earlier. It looks like a hot mess right now with all of the fancy cardboard yarn bobbins I made, but it will hopefully be a nice Tunisian crocheted afghan. This is only my second time playing around with Tunisian crochet, and the first time with color changes. Let me tell you, it's kind of a pain, but I'm hoping the end result will be worth it!

In the process I have learned what not to do with a big Tunisian project. Don't try to do it sitting in an Adirondack chair with it in your lap and don't try doing it sitting on a bed, unless your bed is super firm because everything will end up falling into where you are sitting. The best place I've found to crochet with this ridiculous mass of tangled bobbins is on a table. It's much easier to keep the bobbins organized, and since you work on just the front, you can just spread it out and work back and forth.

I won't lie, there was a point after seeing the slow progress and all the yarn tails that I already had to sew in that I thought "what have I got myself into?!" Well, only a hundred and some rows to go! Eek!!

What are you guys working on? I think I need to hear about some instant gratification projects!

Sunday Smiles

Untitled

Happy Sunday! Did you all have a good week? Mine flew by, but I at least was able to squeeze in a great hike on Saturday. It's the same hike I've done several times, but I think I did it in record time. I must be getting in better shape!

I also learned something new. See the white plant above? I had never seen it before, and wondered if it was a kind of mushroom, as I saw lots of different mushrooms on the hike. After a quick search (google is pretty amazing isn't it?) of "white mushroom flower," I discovered that it wasn't a mushroom, but rather a sort of parasitic plant with an absence of chlorophyl. It's real name is Monotropa uniflora, but is more commonly known as "Indian pipe, " "ghost plant" or "corpse plant." It gets its nutrients from fungi and trees, and if you pick it (or when it gets old) it will turn black. I also read that when the flower parts bloom, the flowers point straight up, and will only stay opened for a week. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to catch it in bloom sometime!

Speaking of lucky to catch, I saw a beautiful deer almost at the very top of the hill I was hiking. It was really big and almost golden colored. (Any more description and it would sound like I was hallucinating or something.) I thought that if I had been a few minutes later getting up to that point I might not have spotted it at all!

Once I did get to the top I was rewarded with the discovery of some wild raspberry bushes. One was ripe for the picking, and it was delicious! With a little bit more time, there will be lots of yummy berries for the next time I feel like challenging myself again.

The whole hike was fantastic, and if a hike can take on a theme, it would be that of Timing. Perhaps I could even say that everything is happening with perfect timing, and with lots of exciting things to look forward to! I'll smile to that.

Sunday Smiles

Untitled

I'm going to preface this post by saying that I never thought I'd be one to post about food. I think the only other time I've talked about food was in reference to my inability to make it in general. Along with that, I had posted a picture of a cake that I successfully made (even if I couldn't eat it myself since I'm a member of the trendy "GF" crowd, albeit not by choice). Anyways, since then I've become a tiny bit more adept in the kitchen.

The above picture is of a polenta salad I made from a recipe on A Beautiful Mess. It was a success (second time I've made it!), and it was delicious. But I think the thing I loved most about it is how pretty and colorful it was!

Untitled

I enjoy food even more when it is colorful and just looks beautiful. This may be a fairly new development for me, which I think is partially due to my long history with food intolerances. I'm finding that these days I'm much more appreciative of the foods I can eat instead of getting bummed about the foods I can't (the biggest offenders being wheat and dairy).

I'm also excited about my green pepper that is just about ready to be picked! I see a stuffed pepper in my future!

Shoot, I've made myself hungry talking about all this food... (That and I can't seem to go more than two hours without having to eat something!)

What about you guys? What foods make you smile?
