Home for the Wall

Back to some Christmas projects!  (I think they're almost done!)  This one however is one my sister made that I wanted to show you!  It is very similar to the project she made back in August for a wedding gift.

She had this vintage frame, but since she couldn't find a mirror (like what she used the first time) she used plexiglass.  Luckily enough Dad had some in the shop!  He cut it to fit the frame (seriously, what would we make without him?  Not much is the answer to that.) and then Gin put vinyl sticker letters (which she found at the hardware store) on the plexiglass.  After a few coats of spray paint and once it was dry, she peeled off the letters... et voila!

I think what's really cool about using the plexiglass is that whatever is behind the frame will show through the letters... like the color of paint on the wall, or you could even put whatever kind of paper you want on the back!  Beautiful job sis!

("Home is wherever I'm with you," is from the song Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.  Great song!!)

I was in NYC this past weekend.  Want to look at a little bit of the city through my eyes?

Granny Arrows Scrap Blanket

This blanket I finished last week was originally going to be a Christmas present, but luckily I had enough sense at some point to realize it wasn't going to get finished in time if I still wanted to work on all my other Christmas projects...  So here's a late Christmas present for my sister and brother-in-law.

All Aboard the Crafty Train!

I've been posting some crochet, some woodworking, some photos... I'm all over the place lately!  Today is no exception as I'm going to show you a little bit more of my friend Nehill's train layout (click HERE and HERE for past posts), since I was recently able to play and craft a bit on it!

Vintage Inspired Pedestal Tables

Today I want to show you the biggest project my dad and I worked on for Christmas.  We made four pedestal tables (two out of oak and two out of maple), based on my Great Grandmother's table that my parents now have.

New Readers and eBook!

I have a few quick things to cover today my fabulous friends!  First off, I want to say "hi" to my new readers!  I just recently surpassed the 300 followers mark!  I know most of you have found your way here through my Squaring the Big Circle tutorial, which leads me to my next item...

I just created the Squaring the Big Circle Flickr group for those of you who'd like to share what you've made from the pattern!  I'd love to see! (Of course you can also go to the Ravelry Pattern Page too.)

Also, this pattern was just included in a free eBook that you can download from  Recognize the picture on the front of Color Scheme Crochet: How to Crochet 17 Colorful Crochet Afghans?

I'm still amazed at the success of this pattern and am so grateful that it has introduced me to so many people!  It's even been used for a couple of charity projects, which really makes me happy!

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments on it, and happy crocheting!

Another Horse Travel Totem

I hope you're not sick of seeing my little horses, because I'm not sick of making them yet! For something different, I painted each side of her a little differently.

Like the others, it was was cut from scrap maple on the band saw (which I love because it's like a souped up version of my little scroll saw), sanded, painted with non-toxic acrylic paints, finished with non-toxic artist's varnish and a little jute tail was glued into a drilled hole.  I think she's pretty darn adorable if I do say so myself.

Have you guys seen any My Neighbor Totoro?  I watched it this summer with my favorite boys, and one of them just had a birthday... so I made him his own Totoro!

First Foray into Jewelry Making

Remember the jewelry boxes from my previous post?  I know, so long ago...  Well, I made some necklaces to match them and made a few more for other Christmas presents.  Above you can see my sister's lovely neck modeling one of them!

I love boxes with no discernible opening at first glance, and got to make some with my dad for Christmas and birthday presents!  I brought my dad some sketches, and then he walked me through the whole project!

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

It's been a little uninspiring outside lately.  It's getting warmer, the snow is melting and getting mixed with mud, and there's been very little color.  Yesterday however, the sun was shining and the sky was blue!  I grabbed my camera and went on the hunt for some color...

The Pepper Scepter

image via Robin's Flickr

I present to you, (cue the royal horn fanfare), The Pepper Scepter!  This is probably my favorite Christmas gift my dad and I made!  We made this (working!) pepper grinder for my brother-in-law who fittingly dubbed it The Pepper Scepter.

Cutting to the Creative Juices

Today I'm going to show you some cutting boards that my dad made for Christmas gifts.  They were all made with whatever he had in the shop from other projects, so that means maple, mahogany, oak, white birch, and there's probably some others thrown in there somewhere!

Vintage Potholders

While writing this post, a few things ran through my head after I typed "Vintage Potholders" for the title.  They started with, "To a lot of people this might sound like the most boring post ever, right after 'The Joys of Watching Paint Dry...'" which led to, "Wait, I for one find vintage potholders pretty darn exciting, so what does that say about me?" then to, "I was probably crocheting potholders on a friday night!" and finally leading to "I'm never going to have kids!!" Hahaha, just kidding.  But seriously.

Alright, enough funny business, are you ready to see the potholders that I made for Christmas?!  Do you think you can handle all the excitement that potholders are apt to generate?  Ok!

Bright New Year's Scrapghan Block

Since it's a new year, I should start a new Scrapghan huh?  (I suppose this also means I should put together the last one!)  I was given this pretty yarn as part of a Christmas gift (with a bright colors theme) from my friends when we exchanged gifts (and celebrated) on New Year's Eve.  And well, I can't let pretty yarn just sit around here for too long!

Mondrian-esqueness! (Sure, that's a word. [Now.])

I thought it would be nice to take a break from posts of what I made for Christmas and show you something that someone made me for Christmas!  How cool is this Mondrian-esque painting Nehill made me?! It's so "me!"

And today is his birthday!  Happy birthday Nehill and thanks again for the super sweet painting!!

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

This was me yesterday: "Shoot!  I've got to go shoot!  Tomorrow's Tuesday and I'm almost out of daylight!"  So I grabbed my new camera, threw on my boots and walked around out back where I found some lines and shadows...

Hirst Inspired Christmas Gifts

I made this Damien Hirst inspired painting for my friend who went with me to the Damien Hirst exhibit (which was amazing, beautiful, disconcerting, controversial... in short, I loved it!) at the Tate Modern back in May on our London trip.

DIY Polaroid Coasters

Awhile ago I found the most brilliant tutorial on darkroom and dearly to make Polaroid looking coasters and knew they'd make great Christmas presents!  I made eight sets of four coasters and loved how each one turned out!

Travel Totems

For Christmas, I made my traveling friends travel totems!  Horses are symbols for travel, freedom, movement, courage, power...  The design was inspired by scandinavian dala horses and rocking horses.  I really love how they came out, and I think I may just have to make more!

Yummy Crochet!

I made some food from Yummy Crochet by Kristen Rask (a little crochet kit I was given this summer), for a couple of different people for Christmas.  I have lots of pictures, but you may not want to look at them all if you're hungry!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year everyone!  I don't usually get all excited about the "new year," but I think this year might have some big exciting things!  For Christmas, my parents got me a Canon Rebel T3!  To me, that's a legit real camera!!  I can't wait to learn how to really use it!  Here are some of my first shots with it:
