I hope you all had a great holiday!  I did!  I've been so busy that I inadvertently took a little break from the internet, but I'm looking forward to catching up with what you guys have been up to and I can't wait to share what I've been doing as well!

Can you believe it's already New Year's Eve?  This year seemed to have flown by!  It was a good year though.  But instead of reflecting on the past year, I think I just want to look forward!

I have lots of crafting planned for this coming year.  For Christmas I got a mini table top lathe, so I'm very excited to play with it!  Turning wood on a smaller scale opens up more possibilities...

And have you guys heard of Project Life?  I've been eyeing it for awhile, and just bought some of the components with some Amazon.com gift cards.  I used to scrapbook a lot, but since I started blogging and discovered how addicting it is to make photo books on Blurb, I've gotten away from scrapbooking with physical paper and prints.  This Project Life system seems to be a quick and easy way to scrap, and will hopefully make me print more photos and do some journaling.  I'm hoping it will also make me take more photos of people!

I also have several projects of my own that I'd like to get back to. When holidays and birthdays come around I drop things I'm making for myself, so it'll be nice to get a little selfish about my crafting!  Does that sound bad?

Giving Thanks

Every year I get a little more nervous for Thanksgiving because it seems like the Christmas shopping sales start earlier and earlier. I think I saw Christmas decorations in the stores before it was even Halloween!  Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, but I also love Thanksgiving because of it's simplicity; there is no need for gifts or extravagant decorations.  It's nice just getting together with friends and family for good food, good company and being thankful for having them in your life... having what really matters.  Anyways, today I'm sharing photos from our simple little thanksgiving.

Owl Pincushion

I made this owl pincushion for my Gram who is turning 93 tomorrow! She sews adorable dresses, nightgowns and bathrobes for 18 inch dolls (like the American Girl dolls), so I thought it'd be fun to make her a new pincushion!

Woodland Creatures

I was commissioned to make these woodland creatures by the recipient of my fox and hedgehog animal sets, which were commissioned by my friend to give as a shower gift... You still with me?  I've made the squirrel and owl in the past, so it was fun to come up with patterns for the bear, bunny and frog!

It's Alive!

While I was working on this little guy (details soon to follow), I realized I usually only show pictures of finished amigurumis (like Mario and Sonic, Totoro, and the striped giraffe).  So here's a photo of an amigurumi in the putting-together stage, a process I find pretty amusing.  I always feel slightly like a mad scientist with all the body parts laying on the table with all my different surgical tools.  As I'm very focused on the job I can see where it'd be handy to have a nurse or an assistant...  "Igor, scissors!  Needle!  T-pins!"  I also find it funny how the little doll takes on a life of it's own as soon as the eyes are attached.  "It's alive!!! Mwahhhhahaha!"  Sometimes I regret having put on the eyes before I'm done stitching all the openings closed or attaching certain limbs; "well, this is awkward!"  Haha!

Anyone else feel like Dr. Frankenstein when making amigurumis?

DIY Pom Pom Flowers and Faux Porcelain Jars

Do you ever get an idea in your head that you can't get out until you just do it?  That's what happened here.  I've wanted to paint several jars all white to use for decoration or a table scape.  I've also been trying hard not to fall victim to the pom pom trend that's been hanging around for awhile... but I just couldn't help it.  Pom poms are just so fluffy and happy!

Distractions...

I'm trying to reorganize all my yarns and threads, but I keep getting distracted... I keep picking up yarn and a hook with "what if I try this...." or "there's only so much of this yarn left, what if I just use it up..."  Plus, yesterday the bright green book you see above, Masterpieces of Irish Crochet Lace, arrived from Amazon, and I keep peeking through it...

I've been really itching to learn how to do Irish crochet lace!  (Just take a peek at all the Irish crochet lace pins on Pinterest... Drool!  Those dresses from the early 1900's are jaw dropping.)  I pulled out that second little pamphlet book, Irish Crochet Lace from my stack of vintage patterns too.  I'm hoping they will serve as motivation to get my yarn organizing done, plus a few other projects done that I already have in the works...  I just can't seem to focus and stay with one project lately!

Photo Booth from Bridal Shower

So this is the post I alluded to in the bridal shower post.  My dad made this photo booth a couple of years ago for my sister's wedding, and it has been used for two other weddings, and just recently a bridal shower!  (You can see the photo booth in action at my sister's wedding here!)  For the bridal shower, all it needed was some kitchen props (aprons, chef hat, kitchen utensils, potholders...), a colorful polka dotted shower curtain, a colorful polka dotted backdrop, and some chalk board talk bubbles!

I'm currently listening to the BBC radio version of Adams' book The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.  I read it a few years ago, so it's fun to hear it come to life!

Do you guys like to listen to audio books?  I've listened to a few from Librivox.org, which is great site because the books (which are all in the public domain) are read by volunteers, and you can listen for free!  I've crafted to Verne, Dickens, Twain, Bronte...  It's a great way to "read" those classics you've been meaning to!

Recipe Box

Today I'm sharing another make for my friend's bridal shower.  (If you're just tuning in, I also made a kitchen wall art piece and a doily and coasters set.)  In the invites that we sent out, we included a 4 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch recipe card for people to fill out and bring to the shower!  So we needed something to collect all the cards.  Here's where I enlisted the help of my dad.

The above quote doesn't necessarily go with the photo.  I couldn't think of a quote, so I thought I'd use some bibliomancy to find one.  I picked up a Tom Robbins book that I'm reading, flipped to a random page, and my thumb was on that quote.

I love reading Tom Robbins not just because of what he says, but how he says it.  I'm not really sure how to word this (irony abounds), but the words he puts down on a page not only have the ability to portray a powerful thought or idea, but they do so while dancing, joking, and generally having too good of a time.  His words also don't make me question the plausibility of a spoon, a dirty sock and a can of beans being capable of having a conversation, let alone being main characters. I'd go so far as to say that reading his books make me believe that words have magical powers.  (Actually, I could go off on a tangent here about another book I'm reading, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, in which the author says that, in another sense, words do have the power to cast spells on people and change lives, and hence we should always be impeccable with our word... but I won't; it is Photo-Tuesday after all!)

Hedgehog and Trees!

I just love making wooden animals for birthday gifts!  I just made this hedgehog for one of my favorite boys and am pleased to report he really liked it!

I plan to make more of these guys (to sell very soon?!) along with some foxes and squirrels, and maybe some more critters (any suggestions?)! My favorite thing about them is how they will always remind me of the person I first designed them for!

I recently got a cable release for my camera, and I must say, I love it! It was perfect for playing with my digital holga lens.  That lens likes lots of light so the cable release helps eliminate camera shake in lower light conditions.  Here are a few shots I took yesterday evening...
