Granny Triangle Half Circle Pillow Tutorial

Granny Triangle Half Circle Pillow Tutorial

Note:  This pattern is constructed of six triangles that create a circle, which is then folded in half and sewn together to cover a decorative half pillow insert.

What you need:
Worsted weight yarn (I used Vanna's Choice)
Size J crochet hook

Written in US stitch terms

Being a "granny" style pattern, there are "holes," so you may want to make a slip cover for your pillow form with fabric.  I used a light weight cotton in an off-white.

Tutorial:

Center Circle

In a magic ring, ch 2, 1 hdc, ch 1, *2 hdc, ch 1, repeat from * around 4 more times, join with sl st in top of ch 2, fasten off.

You should have a circle with six clusters of hdc's, with a ch 1 space between clusters.
Set aside for now.

First Triangle

Start with magic ring.
Rnd 1-  ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 2, repeat from * once more, finish with 3 dc, ch 1, join with sl st in top of ch 3, fasten off.
(You should have six clusters of 3 dc, three ch 2 spaces and three ch 1 spaces.)

When starting each round with a different color, I've used a standing double crochet stitch, but if you prefer, you can use a slip stitch and ch 3 for your first dc.

Rnd 2-  *In ch 2 space: [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc, ch 1], in ch 1 space: [3 dc, ch 1],  repeat from * around, sl st in first dc, fasten off.

Rnd 3-  *In ch 4 space: [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc, ch 1], in next two ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch1], repeat from * around, sl st in first dc, fasten off.

Rnd 4-  *In ch 4 space: [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc, ch 1], in next three ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1], repeat from * around, sl st in first dc, fasten off.

Rnd 5- *In ch 4 space: [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc, ch 1], in next four ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1], repeat from * around, sl st in first dc, fasten off.

Rnd 6- In any ch 4 space: [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc, ch 1], in next five ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1],

in next ch 4 space: [3 dc, ch 2, sl st into a ch 1 space in Center Circle, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1],

in next five ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1], in next ch 4 space: [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc, ch 1], in next five ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1], join with sl st in first dc, fasten off.

Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Triangles

Rnds 1 through 5-  Repeat rnds 1-5 from First Triangle

In preparation for joining round 6 to previous triangle,  place Center Circle/previous triangle in front of you so that the Center Circle is to your left.  You will be joining into the free corner (closest to you) of the previous triangle.

Rnd 6-  In any ch 4 corner: [3 dc, ch 2, sl stitch into ch 4 corner of previous triangle, ch 2, 3 dc, sl st into corresponding ch 1 space of previous triangle, ch 1],

in next five ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, sl st into corresponding ch 1 space of previous triangle, ch 1],

in next ch 4 space: [3 dc, sl st into ch 2 space of previous triangle, ch 1, sl st in next ch 1 space of Center Circle, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1],

in next five ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1], in next ch 4 space: [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc, ch 1], in next five ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1], join with sl st to first dc, fasten off.

(If you don't want to change colors every round: instead of fastening off, sl st into the next three stitches and into the next ch space and ch 3 (counts as first double crochet).

Sixth Triangle

Rnds 1 through 5- Same as Rnds 1-5 of First Triangle

Rnd 6- Same as Rnd 6 of previous triangle, except after sl st to last Center Circle ch 1 space: ch 1, sl st to ch 2 space of First Triangle, ch 1, 3 dc in ch 4 space, * sl st to next ch 1 space of First Triangle, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 space, repeat from * 4 more times, sl st to next ch 1 space of first triangle, ch 1, in ch 4 space [3 dc, ch 2, sl st to ch 4 space of First Triangle, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1], in remaining ch 1 spaces: [3 dc, ch 1], join with sl st to first dc, fasten off.

Border around Circle (of 6 Triangles)

In each ch 1 space and triangle corner spaces: [3 dc, ch1], join with sl st to first dc, fasten off. Sew in ends.

Sewing Pillow Cover

Fold circle in half, with wrong sides facing in, whip stitch through the inner most loops of every dc and ch.

Once you've stitched a little over half of the circle, insert your pillow form, and finish stitching the seam closed.  Sew in ends.

You now have a nice clean seam...

and a finished pillow!
