New Vintage Potholders

Untitled

Does anyone else's heart skip a beat when they see a photo of a wall of vintage potholders (like this one)? Inspired by such photos, I made a little collection of potholders from vintage patterns for a gift. I loved making them, and I love how they came out! Want to see more (and get the links to the patterns)?

This one is made from the Floral Potholder Pattern. Made with size 10 thread and a 1.65mm hook, the finished size was 8 inches. The only thing I changed (besides the colors) was the back. Instead of having an open slit in the back for your hand, I crocheted a solid square in double crochet. (I also crocheted loops for all of the potholders instead of using bone rings.)

I just love the flowers! The pattern wasn't difficult, but it definitely needed blocking.

This one is made from the Star Potholder Pattern. With size 10 thread and a 1.65mm hook, the finished size was 7.25 inches.

Great pattern, but just a bit more time consuming with the popcorn stitches and the color changes. This one may be my favorite from the bunch!

Next up is the Sunflower Potholder. Maybe it doesn't look much like a sunflower as I didn't make it in the traditional yellow and brown, but I still think it's cute. Again, I used size 10 thread, a 1.65mm hook, and its finished size was 6.25 inches. The border around the petals is worked with the thread held double, and for me was a little time consuming and awkward. However, the result was worth it.

This is the Red and White Potholder, which I worked in red and pink. I used size 10 thread, a 1.65mm hook, and the finished size was 7.75 inches.

It was worked very similarly to the Star Potholder pattern with the popcorns and carried thread for color changes. I really like the simple design, and would be interested to see it in different color variations.

Lastly, this is the Round Potholder Pattern. With size 10 thread, a 1.65mm hook, the finished size was 6.75 inches.

Untitled

The back is worked just like the front, but with reverse colors. This was the easiest and quickest of the bunch as it's worked in double crochets, with a simple border crocheting the two together.

For all the potholders I used Artiste size 10 crochet thread from Hobby Lobby in the colors Eggnog, Juniper, Spearmint, Poppy Red and Peach Blossom. I used one skein of each of the colors, only coming close to running out of the Eggnog.

Well, that just looks like a happy pile of potholders to me! Maybe one day I'll make my own wall of vintage potholders!

  3. Yes! I have the same LOVE for vintage potholders. I've participated in a few potholder swaps and have received some beauties. Many times, I hang them on the wall instead of using them. They are just too beautiful to use! Nice work and GREAT colors! Thanks for the links!
