Daisy Scrapghan Block
This scrapghan block is thanks to needlekrafter who found THIS pattern, which is super close to the pattern that I used for my Forget-Me-Not scrapghan block. Because I couldn't find the source of that pattern, I'm so glad needlekrafter found this one for those of you wanting to try it!!
Comparing the two patterns, the Puritan Bedspread pattern is very close to the pattern I made this block and afghan from. In fact, the "flower" part is EXACTLY the same. The very center of the flower, and the square around the flower are slightly different. I think I like the solid center of Design 988 better, but the surrounding square of the Puritan Bedspread pattern is much easier! With Design 988, there were a lot more ends to sew in as you fastened off yarn and joined yarn again several times in the square, which also made the pattern a little harder to memorize. The Puritan Bedspread pattern also didn't take as much pulling and tugging in the blocking phase. After blocking it, it ended up about the same size as Design 988 which for me was about 14 inches.
For those interested, here is what I used/changed for this block:
- Worsted weight yarn (vanna's choice)
- Size J hook
- Started with magic ring instead of ch. 6
- 3rd Row- switched to second color
- 9th Row- switched to third color
- 16th Row- switched back to first color
I really liked how much easier this pattern was. It wasn't that Design 988 was hard, it just took a little bit longer, there were more ends to sew in, and blocking it was a bit more work. Plus, I think this pattern has a much more interesting background.
(Because this block is so similar to my Forget-Me-Not block, and looks like a daisy, I thought I would name it something a little witty, like, He-Loves-Me-Not block.... but then that sounded a lot less witty and a lot more depressing. hahahaha!)
This looks SO pretty, it's like art! Wow, just, wow!
ReplyDeleteOh, my, this is the prettiest flower square! Both are so pretty. I am working on a 100 square afghan for my first time. I would love to try this pattern! It looks hard for me? But something to inspire me to keep trying towards! Thank you for the beautiful post!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Susie

I love this pattern. I found it a few years ago and it is one of the few that I got stuck on. I will have to try it again...I must master this one!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it is a bit tricky, but really not bad once you figure it out! If you ever try it again and run into a problem, let me know! I might be able to help!

Hello Kate,
ReplyDeleteIt is really gorgeous. I too have a hard time understanding the pattern. Would you consider making a video tutorial?
Thanks.
Hi Sylvia,
DeleteI'm not sure I'm skilled enough to do a video tutorial, but if you can let me know where you are running into trouble with the pattern I might be able to talk you through with a couple of photos?
Feel free to email me at signedwithanowl@gmail.com, and I'll help if I can!

I have posted a block called 'Purifying Puritans' which uses the original Puritan block, but changes up the background. In Ravelry, here. Many people use it as a base block for their afghans. If worked in worsted weight, you could probably get a 12" block, but as written in the original pattern, it's closer to 15". http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/purifying-puritans-12-afghan-block-tutorial
ReplyDeleteHi Kate!
ReplyDeleteI've just stumbled upon this lovely pattern....for some reason your blog stopped coming to my Inbox - though I was signed up for it at least 4 years ago.
I'm curious. You listed some changes (mostly with colors) that you used....are all the stitches, etc. the same? I'd love to try this, but am hesitant to buy yarn, and invest time, etc. into something that just won't work! I can read patterns without a problem. More complex stitches don't usually cause me problems.
Hi!
DeleteI followed the pattern exactly except for those few changes- color changes and using a magic ring to start. Easy!
I'm not sure why my posts stopped coming to your inbox, maybe you can try signing up for the emails again from the blog- right hand side on the bottom. (I haven't posted much recently but will be working on a more regular posting routine!)
Thanks for reading!! And I'd love to see what you make if you try making something from that block!
Happy crocheting!

ReplyDeleteIf you click on the link in the first paragraph (says THIS), it takes a few moments for the page to load.
