The Mark of Athena Scrapghan Block

Untitled

I thought it was about time I made another block for my scrapghan based on a book.  I recently read devoured The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, Book 3) by Rick Riordan, and LOVED it.

Yes, they may be kids' books, but they are soooo good!  If you haven't read any books by Rick Riordan you should start with the Percy Jackson series!  They are well written, funny, educational... just great!

But on to the crochet specifics...  I like how I'm getting better at picturing a (simple) design in my head and being able to execute it.  I started with a simple granny type circle, and then started to square the circle with red and orange.  The red and orange rounds were worked on both sides, like I how worked my Granny Arrows On the Diag

This square more abstractly represents the book in that the orange and purple represent the Greek and Roman camps (the colors of the camp teeshirts), and the red represents the Mark of Athena...

Anyways, I'll be counting down the days until The Heroes of Olympus Book 4 comes out next year...  Have you guys read any books by Rick Riordan?  Or any other good books lately?

  1. amazing block Kate!!! love the colours and the meaning behind them!!!
The last book that I've read lately is "The invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick. It's a novel (Martin Scorsese made a movie from that!) for young readers. I've bought it to read it loudly to my kids, but they are no more interested in me reading for them....sigh! Anyway, the book is not so amazing, but I love the story and the drawings ( a lot!) by the author!!

  4. I love the colors in this block!!

I'm just getting to the point in crochet where I feel I can branch out past following patterns. It's pretty fun, but I don't do anything too complicated yet. I love how you just came up with this in your head.

  5. I love the center circle and then the two colors. What a great block. All of my crochet has taken a back seat while I finish work related projects.

  6. I like the way this block gives me an image of the red circle taking a bite out of the purple one, like a sandwich! I can even see the red tooth-marks on the purple sandwich! "The mark of Athena". What a great-sounding name!
