Teacup Planters

Untitled

Have you ever found the PERFECT planter but were reluctant to use it because of the lack of a drainage hole in the bottom? The solution is a diamond tip drill bit! After getting some bits (I ordered this super cheap set [of which the bits might not be the best quality, but for that price I wouldn't be upset if I only got a few uses out of them]), and drilling some holes, I planted succulents in two large teacups.

I couldn't pass up these white teacups when I saw them at T.J. Maxx. At first I picked up just one, as I was going to make a succulent planter for my friend. However, its cuteness made me go back and pick up a second for myself! I then bought six little succulents to split up between the cups, a bag of cactus and succulent soil, and for my friend's teacup I bought the little squirrel that you can see to the left of the cup. (I would be remiss if I ever gave her a gift that didn't include a squirrel in it somehow. You can see a past gift I made her here.)

(You can just about make out the creepy little squirrel in the front of the planter.)

I was a little nervous about drilling a hole in the bottom of the cups, so I of course enlisted the help of my dad. We used the 1/2 inch size diamond bit, held it at an angle to get the hole started, and were able to pool some water on the bottom of the cup to keep the bit wet while it cut. Easy peasy. I think having a second pair of hands to hold the cup steady also helped.

I love how the planters turned out, and now I look at cups and bowls differently: "Oooo, I could drill a hole in the bottom of that and turn it into a planter!"

  1. Those cups look great as planters (and, if this doesn't sound weird, the plants and cups 'go' really well together). Love the tip for making holes in planters-that-aren't-planters!!! :-)
