My Sister Knows Me All Too Well

Untitled

In my final stage of a little project, the dreaded sewing-in-ends stage, I realized it was the perfect opportunity to show you what my sister had made me for my birthday!  I'm not sure yet what to call it as it deserves some sort of epic name, something better than End Catcher-Pincushion-Scissor Holder-Thinga-Ma-Bob...  But how cool is it?!  The pincushion part is weighted so that it can sit on the edge of a desk or table, or on the arm of a chair or couch, it can hold my needle, any pins, my favorite little Gingher scissors, and all the little ends that get cut off those crochet projects.  I usually end up with little piles of those pesky ends all over the place (and then end up trailing them around the house accidentally), and if I'm sitting on the couch working, I end up sticking the poor couch arm with my needle and losing my scissors between the cushions...  But not now!!  Everything is conveniently in one place, all nice and organized, something I desperately need haha!!

(Oh, you can also see part of a painting she also made me!  I'll have to show you the whole thing when it gets hung on a wall somewhere!  She also made me the most adorable zipper pouches which as I unwrapped, I kept discovering one inside the next... pretty awesome.)

Do you guys have any tips or tricks when it comes time for sewing in ends?  Are you someone who has enough self control to sew in ends as you go, or are you like me who crochets (or knits) like mad and then has a million ends to sew in when you're done?

  1. What a wonderful gift your sister gave you for your birthday! I love useful gifts like that, especially when they're homemade like this one!
Hmmm. Those loose ends... I do like to keep them at bay when I'm making small crochet projects, on a granny square I wait until I'm at the end though when there are frequent colour changes.

  2. Oh that is fantastic! I get ends everywhere, I did make a little basket for them but then I forget the basket :/ As for ends I always sew as I go. I find that if I do I can sew them into the top of stitches and then make them more secure by crocheting over them as well x

  3. I sew them in as I go if possible or when I need to rest my wrists/arms but I can't bear to stop working on the project. I use an empty Kleenex box to keep my ends in the plastic on the top keeps them from falling out if it gets knocked over.

  4. What a cool gift! I love the idea of having something there to catch all the bits of cotton (I usually end up with them stuck all over my clothes, and Simon has to de-bit me every time we leave the house)!!! :-)

  5. That is a fantastic idea from your sister! How wonderful :) I wish I had a creative sister to make me things and share my crafty likes with...
Ends are tricky - I started out doing them as I went along - and still try to - but now I mostly end up doing them in 'batches' every so often. Done a lot just now though as I can't find my crochet hook right now so it's my only way to make progress until I find it / replace it!

    1. Haha! That's what I need to do; I'll have someone steal my hook from me to force me into working on the ends every once in awhile!

Yes, I'm very lucky to have a crafty sister! But at least you have this fabulous crafty blog community who would happily adopt you as a crafty sister!! :)

      Happy crafting!
