Sunday Smiles

Untitled

Happy Sunday my friends!  I hope you are smiling today!  I am, because above is a picture of things that make me smile, within something else that makes me smile!  Let me explain.  I recently started the 100 Happy Days project.  Basically, you post a picture a day, to your preferred sharing platform (or you can keep it private), with something that made you happy that day.  I thought it would be a great exercise to make me take at least one photo a day, and how can constantly thinking about things that make you happy be bad?  (You can follow my progress on Instagram @signedwithanowl.)  So for day 5/100, I took that photo of some of the objects that have been making happy as of late...

Square Medallion 1911

Square Medallion 1911

This square, Square Medallion from 1911, takes the cake for the oldest pattern I've crocheted from, beating the Venetian Square from 1915. Maybe it's just me, but I find that pretty exciting!  Crocheting from old patterns is such a hands on way to connect to women of the past!

Have a great Tuesday my friends!

Sunday Smiles

Untitled

There may not be flowers outside due to the still present snow, but there are flowers in beer steins, and that makes me smile!  What made me smile even more was the birthday dinner we had yesterday for my dad, whose birthday is today!

More Filet Crochet

Untitled

After my first foray into filet crochet (hey, that kind of rhymes!), I was itching for more.  Thank goodness for birthdays, right?  I made these coasters plus two more doilies for my sister.  The teal thread that I used for her other doily was just begging to be used a little more...  I could not refuse.

Sunday Smiles

Untitled

It always makes me smile when something works out just as I imagined! For my sister's birthday I sent her some air plants from Etsy, and made two air plant holders to go with them.  Because I ordered the air plants and sent them straight to her, I only had a rough idea about the size of the air plants, which made me a little nervous about whether or not the holders were going to work.  So I was so relieved and happy when Gin sent me this photo of the elephant air plant holder!  The air plant fits in the hole I cut, and it looks so cute!  (I'll have to write a post with more details about the elephant and the other holder I made too.)

You know what makes me smile even more?  Seeing, in the background of the photo, the cactus that I made her!  It makes me so happy to see something that I've made and given as a gift being used.  It's such a great feeling when something you've made for someone is liked well enough to be displayed in their home.  I also can't help but get that "hey, I made that!" feeling each time!  There's something about seeing something that started as an abstract idea in your head, in a physical setting you don't see everyday...  It just makes that abstract idea somehow more real.  Maybe I'm not explaining this very well!  It gives me a sense of pride, and more importantly I'm amazed and reminded that we all have this ability to create and bring to life anything we can imagine.

I'm reminded of the Pablo Picasso quote, "Everything you can imagine is real."  I really love this quote, and I think it speaks volumes... so much so that I don't even know where to begin in talking about all that I think it means!  Instead, I'll leave you to ponder what it may mean to you, and you can also check out this cute print I found on Etsy awhile ago that I may just have to purchase for my wall!

Granny Stripes Blanket

Untitled

There are a lot of granny stripes folded up right there!  This blanket ended up being a bit larger than planned, but since I was making it for the coolest 14 year old boy I know, it wasn't hard to keep plugging away at it!

Extravagant Doily

Untitled

In doily withdrawal?  Well, suffer no longer.  This is the Extravagant Doily which I made my sister for her birthday.

Sunday Smiles

Untitled

No, you haven't traveled back in time, I'm just a little late in getting this intended-for-Sunday post to you!  (But you can pretend you've traveled back in time if you'd like!)  So what makes me smile?  Traveling by plane...

Hexa-Gone-to-California!

Untitled

I have two things to share today.  One, my experiment with a new hexagon pattern, and two, I'm leaving today for a 10 day visit to California to see some of my favorite people!

Connie's Garden Tutorial

Connie's Garden

Remember when I posted the Connie's Garden square and said I would work on a tutorial?  Well here it is!  This pattern has popcorn stitches and picot stitches, which might seem tricky, but I'm going to do my best with photos and explanations so that if you've never tried these stitches before, you can learn how!  So don't be scared!

Welcome to a Petey edition of Photo-Tuesday!  This is Pete, and she's a pretty crazy cat, which means she makes a pretty good photo subject... (If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably seen these, sorry!)

Sunday Smiles With a Side of Spam and Eggs

Untitled

I was recently thinking about Sundays, and how despite my dislike for them, because they mark the end of the weekend, I really like my Sunday morning ritual of sitting down with a cup of tea and checking out the weekly secrets on Postsecret.com (and then perusing my favorite sites and blogs of course)!  The song Sunday Smile by Beirut then started playing in my head, and an idea was born.  What if on Sundays I share different things that are making me smile?  (Side note, did you know that even faking smiles can make you feel happy?!)
